The sari is the simplest yet sensual traditional Indian garment that can be worn in a number of ways. A perfectly draped sari accentuates your curves, making you look graceful, elegant and alluring. Getting the knack to drape a sari takes some time and practice to perfect. These steps will take you though this process.
Step 1. A sari is an unstitched garment and to wear a sari you need a good fitting blouse that covers your bust and a full-length petticoat that covers your ankles.
Step 2. For the first wrap take one end of the sari which is the plain end and wrap it around your waste, tucking it in to your petticoat. Make sure the sari touches the floor.
Step 3. Now you have two options. First to make the pleats without setting the pallu and second which is easier, take the decorative end of the sari which is the pallu and throw it over your left shoulder. Now with the remaining material that falls at your feet, make the pleats that are around 5 inches wide. Depending on the length of the sari the number of pleats will wary. For a 5 yard sari, approximately 7-8 pleats will be formed.
Step 4. After making the pleats, tuck them in to your petticoat below your navel. Fasten with a safety pin.
Step 5. Its time to do the last bit and that is to fasten the pallu. There are various ways to leave the pallu. If you’re a working lady it’s recommended to pin up the pallu so that it’s easy to manage. For evenings out to get that elegant look allow your pallu to floor over your arm. Just pin up the end of the pallu. If your sari has a decorative pallu with heavy embroidery and zari then flaunt it the Gujrathi style. Take the pallu around the right shoulder and bring it in front. Spread it out like a fan. If you are wearing a fancy blouse that you want to show off, make thin pleats of the pallu and take in from the center of your bust.
This is the basic way to wear a sari; retro styles and styles exclusive to the different cultures of India give you many more options to explore this versatile garment.
